1. Broccoli was highly valued by the Romans.🥦

The history of broccoli goes back much further than you’d think.

Like many other vegetables we eat today, broccoli was cultivated from a mix of different plants and then selectively bred to become the vegetable we know today.

This vegetable’s history goes back to the Etruscans, an ancient Italian civilization that predated the Roman Empire.

The Etruscan people cultivated the vegetable sometime around the 6th Century BC.

The Romans adopted many aspects of Etruscan culture, including their love for broccoli.

2.England called it Italian asparagus.🥦

As we’ve previously mentioned, broccoli is a part of the same family as cabbage, a large family that includes cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, collard greens, and kohlrabi.

Despite this, when the vegetable first made it to England, it was instead associated with asparagus.

In fact, despite being a favored food of the Romans, it seems that it took a long time to spread further than Italy.

The earliest report of it in France, for example, is as late as the 1500s!

More than 200 years later, it was still relatively unknown in England, with it being called “Italian asparagus” in a popular gardening dictionary.

3.It wasn’t until the 1920s that broccoli became common in the US.🥦

One of the first records we have relating to broccoli in the US goes back to the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson.

See, Jefferson had a bit of a green thumb, and as such, he would frequently share seeds with some of his friends over in Europe.

One such packet of seeds that he received were broccoli seeds, which he noted sowing at his estate in Virginia on May 27, 1767.

It wasn’t until much later in the 1920s that broccoli became a common sight when Italian migrants brought it over and regularly consumed them.

Even then, it was almost exclusively eaten by Italian migrants and their descendants for decades before becoming a bit more mainstream.

4.George H. W. Bush banned broccoli on Air Force One.🥦

Some people hate broccoli, and then there are people that hate broccoli so much that they publicly declare that they never want to see the vegetable ever again.

Believe it or not, that man was the 41st president of the United States of America, George H. W. Bush.

While in a press conference, Bush stated (and I kid you not) “I do not like broccoli, and I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it, and I’m president of the United States, and I’m not going to eat any more broccoli.”

He made this declaration when asked why he had banned the vegetable from all Air Force One flights.

5.Broccoli is really good for your health!🥦

First things first, if you know how to cook broccoli well, it can be absolutely delicious.

Most people who dislike it, probably including George H. W. Bush, have simply only ever been fed it in an over-cooked mushy gross state.

The truth is that broccoli is incredibly good for you, so good that the term “superfood” is quite often thrown around in association with it.

It’s high in protein, fiber, vitamin C and is a good source of vitamin A, vitamin B6, potassium, and calcium, among many others.

It’s also full of antioxidants, is good for your digestion, and is even claimed to help prevent cancer!

It’s time to end the stigma against broccoli.

There’s no such thing as a bad vegetable, but there’s definitely such a thing as a bad cook.

If you’ve never been a fan of a vegetable such as broccoli, maybe go and ask a friend who likes cooking to serve some up to you.

Better yet, try your hand at cooking it; it’s really not that difficult!

If you still don’t like it, then fair enough, at least you got a good amount of vitamins and minerals in the process!

Gran Abuelo is located in Alerce Costero National Park, Chile. The tree is the oldest living tree in South America.

As of 2021, Gran Abuelo was 3,647 years old. Its age means that it was germinated in 1,500 BCE.

Gran Abuelo stands at over 196 feet (60 meters) tall and 13 feet (4 meters) wide.

It has a perimeter of 36 feet (11 meters).

Gran Abuelo is a Patagonian Cypress (Fitzroya cupressoids).

Sadly the Patagonian Cypress is an endangered species.

This is because the tree contains a resin that slows down the time it takes to deteriorate; therefore it has become a popular building material.

2.Sarv-e Abarkuh (Abarkuh Cypress) – 4,500 years old.

Sarv-e Abarkuh can be found in Abarkuh, Iran.

The species is a Mediterranean Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) and is believed to be around 4,500 years old.

Sarv-e Abarkuh is a natural monument in Iran and is protected by the Cultural Heritage Organization of Iran.

This particular tree was aged to be between 4,000-5,000 years old.

It is difficult to tell the exact age of this species as quite often the core will disappear over time and will be taken over by new large shoots that replace the area the core once was.

The tree has its own certificate that was issued by English botanist David Bellamy, confirming its age.

The Llangernyw Yew is an important part of the community as is the heart of local folklore tales.

The Llangernyw Yew appears in Welsh mythology as the place where the spirit called Angelystor (Recording Angel) will appear each Halloween to tell the village who will die next.

The species is a clonal colony tree.

You might be wondering how you can tell its age if this is the case.

The age can be seen through the root system, which is dated to be around 9,500 years old.

It is expected that the tree was brought to the areas by humans to germinate.

This theory shows that the climate in Sweden may have warmed sooner than scientists once thought.

1.The hashtag was first used online on August 23, 2007.

Chris Messina first suggested using the hashtag to keep track of conversations on Twitter.

He approached Twitter with the concept at a bad time as they were preoccupied, and sadly the idea was forgotten.

So Messina started to use them regardless to see if he could start a trend.

Finally, Twitter caught on, and this is where the hashtag became what it is today.

Messina’s first-ever hashtag was #barcamp.

2.The hashtag is used to mean number or pounds (lb).

The “hashtag” used to be associated with the “pound” sign in the US.

The Latin for pound weight was “libra pondo,” and in the 14th century, the term became abbreviated to lb.

In the late 1800s, the Blickensderfer model 5 typewriter explained in its manual that the “#” symbol could be used for pound weight as there was no lb button.

The manual wrote that if “#” was placed in front of a word, it referred to a number. But if “#” was placed after a word, it referred to pound weight.

This was the beginning of the “#” used to represent weight and numbers.

3.You cannot patent a hashtag.

Some people wonder why Messina didn’t patent the hashtag, as he could be a millionaire.

The answer is he couldn’t. Although he had no interest in doing so, it isn’t possible. You can only patent a design, invention, process, or a machine.

The hashtag concept or hashtags themselves don’t fall into any qualifying categories.

The only way to own a hashtag is to trademark it.

4. A feature called the “hashflag” was introduced in 2010.

Twitter used “hashflags” alongside the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

This was a temporary feature during the World Cup. It stopped once the matches were over.

But due to its success, Twitter reintroduced hashflags in 2014 for the World Cup in Brazil.

The system worked by allowing users to tweet the three-letter country code of the 32 competing countries.

Once this was typed into the hashtag, it would be replaced with the specific country flag.

5. Hashtags are so popular that they appear in our food.

In 2014 Bird’s Eye food created a new deep-fried delight called the “mashtag.”

This was an updated variation of their famous smiley faces that they thought would attract the social media generation.

The crispy potato shapes included the hashtag and various other symbols associated with social media.
